004Choices, Choices

With the advent of the Internet, there’s always a choice in what software one can use. Examples include the famous Mac vs PC vs Linux debate.

However, there are many useful programs much more powerful than their more traditional, well-known counterparts, some of which will be discussed here.

Mozilla Firefox and Opera are both great alternatives to Internet Explorer. All three web browsers include tabbed browsing, but Opera (my personal favorite) features more exotic - yet functional - features such as Speed Dial, Widgets, and Mouse Gestures. Mozilla Firefox is widely praised for its ease of use and wide extensibility. Apple has recently joined the foray with its equally excellent Safari.

For everyday reading of PDFs, FoxIt Reader and SumatraPDF are far superior to Adobe Reader. They launch quicker and faster, consume less RAM, and SumatraPDF is even open-source.

Lastly, the bundled Windows Explorer, even with the improvements in Vista, is only marginally useful at best. For power users, alternatives such as xplorer2 boast features such as tabbed interfaces, folder set bookmarking, and full FTP support.
